What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a sophisticated approach to skin renewal that uses tiny microcrystals to clear the superficial skin layers of debris, dead cells, and other unwanted elements.

This minimally invasive exfoliating treatment is hailed by patients of all skin types and tones as a discreet, yet effective alternative to chemical peels. 

While microdermabrasion is most frequently applied to the face, it can also be used on the chest and hands to treat a range of common skin concerns.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion relies on two key mechanisms to clear up the superficial skin layers while stimulating collagen activity and other healing responses.

As the fine microcrystals make contact with the outer skin layer, dry skin cells are sloughed off, revealing a younger and more radiant-looking layer of skin just underneath. Then, since the body reacts to the treatment like an injury, collagen production, blood flow, and other repair processes begin working to rejuvenate the area. In the weeks following your treatment, increased circulation and cell regeneration allow for continued improvements.

Who Are Good Candidates for Microdermabrasion?

The ideal microdermabrasion patient is someone who wants to improve their skin’s appearance without extensive downtime or invasive procedures. Well-suited candidates typically have:

Realistic expectations about the results, how long it takes to achieve them, and what microdermabrasion is able to treat. Patients with advanced skin laxity, heavy scarring, or other more significant skin concerns are typically not well-suited to microdermabrasion.

Good overall health, including a medical history that does not include active rosacea, infections, certain immune conditions and bleeding disorders, and other concerns to be discussed between you and your provider in a consultation.

Commitment to aftercare practices like consistent sun protection, gentle skin care, and any other personalized recommendations as issued by your provider.

How to Prepare for Microdermabrasion

Knowing what to do and expect before and after your microdermabrasion treatment can make the difference between average and significantly longer-lasting results. Success requires both the patient and the provider to align on several key points relating to prep and aftercare, including follow-up appointments as necessary.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

As applicable, microdermabrasion patients may be asked to do (or not do) the following prior to their treatment session:

  • Cease use of retinoids and other products that may interfere with treatment 
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen
  • Arrive at treatment with clean, make-up free skin
  • Wear comfortable clothing to allow access to the treatment area

What to Expect During Microabrasion Treatment

Once the treatment area is cleansed and ready, we will begin the microdermabrasion process by gently applying the handpiece in overlapping passes. Microdermabrasion is rarely described as painful. Most patients report a slight warming or tingling sensation throughout the treatment. Many patients, in fact, enjoy the sensation.

Depending on the size of the treatment area(s), you can expect the session to take between 30 to 60 minutes.

What to Expect After Microdermabrasion

While microdermabrasion is a gentle and well-tolerated treatment, it still comes with some routine post-treatment effects, including the following:

  • Reddish or pink color around the treatment area
  • Mild skin tightness
  • Mild sensitivity

Typically, any pink or red color you observe around the treatment area will resolve within the same day of your session. Any skin tightness or sensitivity you experience should subside within a similar timeframe.
