How Does Laser Hair Reduction Work?

The laser emitted by Cutera® excel HR laser and most other laser hair reduction treatment platforms seeks out the pigment, or melanin, in hair follicles. The light energy is then absorbed by this part of the hair follicle, impairing its ability to produce new hair.

This process is selective, meaning that the laser can accurately distinguish between the melanin in your hair and the melanin in your skin so that surrounding tissues are preserved.

Who Are Good Candidates for Laser Hair Reduction?

While people with lighter-colored hair are not necessarily disqualified from laser hair reduction treatment, we will perform test patches in these cases to determine whether or not the treatment can accurately isolate the hair follicle.

Otherwise, anyone in good overall health with realistic expectations about the gradual treatment process can benefit from laser hair reduction.

Specifically, laser hair reduction may be effective for:

Patients committed to completing the recommended treatment series
Patients who are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
Patients with stable hormone levels (not on hormonal treatments)

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Reduction

Dr. Aggarwal will provide you with a personalized set of pre-treatment instructions, which are essential for all patients to follow in order to achieve the best results.

Here are some general guidelines we ask the majority of patients to follow prior to treatment:

Shaving: Cleanly shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours before treatment.
Sun Protection: Avoid tanning, sun exposure, and self-tanning products for four weeks prior to treatment.
Skincare: Discontinue use of products containing retinoids and any other products as directed by your provider. Avoid treatments that may irritate the skin for one to two weeks before treatment.
Health History Updates: Inform our team of any new changes to your health history, including medications and supplements.

What to Expect During Laser Hair Reduction Treatment

Comfort and safety are our two top priorities throughout the treatment process. We will first thoroughly cleanse the treatment area, and you will be provided with protective eyewear. The provider will then adjust the device’s settings to accommodate your skin type, hair color, and other factors.

As the Cutera® excel HR laser applicator delivers pulses of light energy to the hair follicles, you may feel a tingling or snapping sensation, followed by a cooling sensation.

Treatment time varies between just a few minutes to upwards of half an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. We will communicate with you throughout treatment to ensure you remain comfortable.

What to Expect After Laser Hair Reduction

The recovery process is very simple and short-lived. Most patients resume their full schedules immediately following treatment. However, knowing what to look for in terms of post-treatment effects (and how to manage them) is still important to a successful overall experience.

After treatment, the treated area will appear red and slightly raised. This is a normal part of the process and typically resolves within a full day. Routine post-treatment swelling resolves within two days in most cases.

In the following weeks, it may actually appear that hair growth is increasing, but this is a sign that the targeted follicles are shedding the damaged hairs.

What Results Can I Expect from Laser Hair Reduction?

No treatment currently on the market, except for electrolysis, can permanently remove all unwanted hair. However, laser hair reduction platforms like Cutera® excel HR laser are becoming increasingly efficient, typically removing more than 50 percent of unwanted hair.

We typically include seven sessions with our laser hair reduction packages, which increases the chances of treating the follicles while they are in the anagen phase. If light regrowth occurs, touch-ups are an easy way to maintain your results over the long term.

How Much Does Laser Hair Reduction Cost?

The size and complexity of treatment areas, the number of sessions performed, provider location and fee structure, and several other factors can affect laser hair reduction treatment cost.

Typically, laser hair reduction is classified by insurance policies as an elective cosmetic procedure, but there are instances in which the treatment may be deemed medically necessary (and partially or fully covered). Patients with folliculitis, Cushing’s Syndrome, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), or Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, for example, may be more likely to receive coverage.
