If it affects your aesthetic and your confidence, no skin concern is too small for treatment. That’s why our team at the Aesthetic Care Center offers nonsurgical cryotherapy treatments to address a wide range of benign skin lesions, including skin tags, warts, keloids, and more. Under the expertise of Dr. Manu B. Aggarwal, a board-certified family physician with certification in venous and lymphatic medicine, the Aesthetic Care Center will clear up your skin with quick, convenient, and effective cryotherapy treatments.

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is an umbrella term encompassing several different techniques and modalities that use cold temperatures to produce therapeutic effects. These techniques and modalities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ice packs
  • Ice baths
  • Coolant sprays
  • Cryo-chambers
  • Cryosurgery

The type of cryotherapy practiced by our team at the Aesthetic Care Center involves using liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy various skin lesions.

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

Cryotherapy via liquid nitrogen eliminates unwanted skin lesions by freezing the targeted tissue to an extremely low temperature, effectively killing the tissue.

At more than three hundred degrees (Fahrenheit) below zero, liquid nitrogen quickly goes to work destroying the targeted tissue, including cutting off blood supply to the lesion. Importantly, this controlled micro-injury prompts the body to activate healing mechanisms that encourage healthy cell regeneration.

Days or weeks after your cryotherapy treatment, your immune system will work to replace the lost tissue for a natural, healthy-looking result.

What Does Cryotherapy Treat?

Cryotherapy is as versatile as it is effective, allowing our team at the Aesthetic Care Center to address a broad range of benign skin issues.

Skin concerns commonly treated by cryotherapy include:

  • Actinic keratosis: Pre-cancerous sun damage spots
  • Skin tags: Commonly found on the neck and underarms
  • Small warts: Commonly found on the hands, feet, and other body areas
  • Seborrheic keratoses: Age spots or barnacles
  • Small moles: Benign status needs to first be confirmed

Cryotherapy for skin lesions is not intended to replace dermatologic care. All cryotherapy patients should still see a board-certified dermatologist regularly. Cryotherapy should not be used to treat suspicious skin lesions that have not yet been cleared by a dermatologist (including biopsies as necessary).

How to Prepare for Cryotherapy Treatment

The first step in a successful cryotherapy treatment plan is to report for a consultation appointment. As applicable, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to allow access to the skin lesion(s). The consultation is an excellent opportunity to voice any preferences you have, ask questions, and provide information needed for an effective, personalized approach.

As part of the consultation, you will be given instructions on how to prepare for treatment, including products to use (and avoid), how to clean the area, and any other recommendations based on your unique circumstances.

What to Expect During Cryotherapy

Once you are comfortably positioned and ready for treatment, Dr. Aggarwal or one of our skilled practitioners will thoroughly cleanse the treatment area. If there are multiple lesions to be treated, they will be identified and briefly inspected.

Then, we will use a specialized applicator called the cryogun to deliver a steady stream of liquid nitrogen to the lesion(s). The cryogun is preferred by many dermatologists for its controlled application, minimizing unwanted tissue damage by ensuring the liquid nitrogen is distributed evenly.

You will likely feel a stinging or burning sensation as the liquid nitrogen is applied, but this resolves almost immediately after application stops.

What to Expect After Cryotherapy

In the days following your cryotherapy treatment, scabbing is to be expected as the treated lesion prepares to slough off. Bandages are typically not necessary.

To ensure proper healing, protecting yourself from sun exposure and refraining from scratching the lesion are recommended. We can also recommend a variety of skincare products for patients looking to enhance healing with topicals.

Cryotherapy Recovery and Potential Side Effects

Cryotherapy is a well-tolerated treatment with a low incidence of severe side effects. Most patients experience the following side effects:

  • Slight redness immediately after treatment
  • Crusting
  • Clear drainage
  • Mild discomfort

Though highly uncommon, severe side effects include infection, severe blistering, nerve damage, or significant discomfort. Call the Aesthetic Care Center at any time if you have questions or concerns about your cryotherapy recovery.

What Results Can I Expect From Cryotherapy?

Following a successful cryotherapy treatment, the lesion will be completely eliminated. In most cases, the regenerated skin is brighter than the surrounding skin at first but blends in for a seamless aesthetic after a few weeks or months.

Some lesions may require a second treatment session (especially larger lesions), but in most cases, only one session is required.

How Much Does Cryotherapy Cost?

The cost of cryotherapy for skin lesions can vary significantly depending on a range of factors, including the number, size, and location of treated lesions. Whether or not you need multiple treatment sessions can also significantly impact cost.

As for insurance coverage, cryotherapy for benign skin lesions is typically not covered, as it is classified as an elective cosmetic procedure. Still, always check with your plan to see if you meet the requirements for medical necessity, or if coverage is otherwise available.
