Skin tags can be more than just a cosmetic concern – they can affect your comfort and confidence in daily life. At the Aesthetic Care Center, Dr. Manu Aggarwal and her expert team provide safe, effective solutions for skin tag removal. Our patients often come to us after trying various home remedies, seeking professional treatment that delivers reliable results.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags (acrochordons) are benign skin growths that typically form in areas where skin folds, such as the armpits, neck, groin and eyelids. These soft, flesh-colored or brown growths are made up of loose collagen fibers and blood vessels hanging from the skin by a thin stalk.

While skin tags might resemble warts, they have distinct characteristics. Unlike warts, skin tags have a smooth, soft surface and are not contagious. They can appear alone or in clusters, and while usually small, they can occasionally grow larger. Studies suggest that 50 to 60% of adults will develop skin tags during their lifetime.

What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tags develop when extra cells grow in the top layers of skin, often occurring in areas with frequent friction. While they can appear at any age, they’re most common in your 40s. Several factors can increase your risk of developing skin tags:

  • Elevated blood lipids
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetic predisposition

However, many people develop skin tags without any obvious risk factors. The condition often runs in families, suggesting a genetic component to their formation.

How Are Skin Tags Treated?

At the Aesthetic Care Center, Dr. Aggarwal offers several proven methods for skin tag removal, each tailored to your specific situation. Our team carefully evaluates each growth to determine the most effective treatment approach.

01 /
Excision

This precise surgical technique involves either snip excision or shave removal. After applying a local anesthetic for your comfort, Dr. Aggarwal uses specialized surgical scissors or a sharp razor to carefully remove the skin tag. The procedure is quick and typically leaves minimal scarring. No sutures are needed, making recovery straightforward.

02 /
Cauterization

This advanced treatment uses controlled heat to remove skin tags. We offer several cauterization methods:

  • Electrical cauterization using precise current
  • Laser treatment for precise targeting
  • Chemical cauterization for smaller tags

The process seals blood vessels as it removes the growth, minimizing bleeding and promoting quick healing.

03 /
Cryosurgery

This technique uses extreme cold, typically liquid nitrogen, to freeze and destroy skin tags. Cryosurgery is particularly effective for smaller growths and offers these benefits:

  • Minimal discomfort during treatment
  • Quick procedure time
  • No bleeding
  • Rapid healing

Who Are Good Candidates for Skin Tag Removal?

Skin tag removal is suitable for most adults who are bothered by these growths. Good candidates typically include those who:

  • Have skin tags that catch on clothing or jewelry
  • Experience discomfort or irritation from skin tags in high-friction areas
  • Feel self-conscious about visible skin tags, particularly on the neck or face
  • Want to prevent recurring irritation from larger skin tags
  • Are in good overall health without active skin infections
  • Have realistic expectations about the treatment process and results

Before proceeding with removal, Dr. Aggarwal conducts a thorough evaluation to confirm the growths are indeed skin tags and not other skin conditions requiring different treatment approaches. While most skin tags are benign, any sudden changes in size, color or appearance should be evaluated promptly.

Skin Tag Removal Recovery

Each skin tag removal treatment creates a small wound that follows a typical healing process. Understanding this process helps you know what to expect during your recovery.

01 /
Week 1

  • Days 1-2: The treatment site appears red with slight swelling. A small scab begins to form.
  • Days 3-4: The scab darkens and the surrounding redness starts to fade.
  • Days 5-7: The area may feel itchy as healing progresses – this is normal but avoid scratching.

02 /
Week 2

  • The scab naturally begins to loosen around the edges.
  • The skin underneath appears pink.
  • Any residual swelling should be completely resolved.

03 /
Weeks 3-4

  • The scab typically falls off completely.
  • The new skin appears pink or light red.
  • The treatment area may be slightly more sensitive than surrounding skin.

04 /
Month 2 and Beyond

  • Pink coloration gradually fades to match your natural skin tone.
  • The treated area becomes less noticeable over time.
  • Any minor scarring continues to improve.
